Addressing Farm-Level Challenges
For generations, smallholder farmers in Lushoto have been working the land to feed families and sustain local communities. However, growers faced severe ongoing challenges: declining soil fertility, hillside erosion, unpredictable weather patterns, limited access to improved seed varieties, and above all, a lack of structured, dependable produce markets.
Our journey began by promoting sustainable land management—introducing terracing, contour farming, and soil-enriching practices to restore land health and reduce degradation on steep mountain slopes.
Discovering the Potential of Avocado
During our community work, one untapped opportunity stood out above all others: Avocado ("The Green Gold"). Lushoto's ideal elevation and micro-climate allowed avocado trees to thrive naturally, and production was steadily increasing. Yet, without organized buyers, farmers often saw their high-quality yields go to waste or sell for predatory prices.
We recognized an immediate calling: rather than introducing unfamiliar crops, we could bridge an existing farming strength directly to reliable markets.

Building Sustainable Pathways to Market
Connecting local growers to consumers required more than simply finding buyers. It called for an organized value chain where production, harvesting, quality inspection, and transport were seamlessly aligned.
By collaborating with local and international buyers and developmental partners, we established structured collection standards that prepare smallholder harvests for both regional and global consumption.
From Lushoto Hillside Farms to local and International Markets
Since expanding our export operations, more than 700 tonnes of avocado have been successfully harvested and marketed. Every tonne represents dozens of farming families whose multi-year investments in tree care now turn directly into household security, education fees, and farm reinvestment.

The journey of the Green Gold is still unfolding. Moving forward, we aim to expand our outgrower networks, deepen technical extension services, achieve advanced international organic certifications, and ensure that a greater share of value remains directly in the hands of Lushoto farming communities.
